Clinical Research

The Clinical Research Graduate Program provides a solid clinical/translational research foundation for junior faculty, clinical and postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, medical students, and other health professionals interested in clinical research. The program will provide students with the foundations for disciplinary excellence, including the knowledge, skills, and perspective to engage in interdisciplinary investigations that will result in innovation and accelerated rates of translation of basic biomedical science into clinically useful therapies.

Chemistry

The Chemistry Graduate Program at UC Davis is world-renowned and represents the full breadth of the discipline, including analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, physical, and theoretical chemistry. Students can choose among 40 faculty members from departments across campus, including the School of Medicine, College of Engineering, College of Biological Sciences, and the Genome Center, to work on highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects.

Biophysics

Biophysics offers a graduate education program that focuses on the interface of biology, physics, chemistry, engineering, and mathematics, and explores the physical laws governing the properties and interaction of biomolecules and cells. The program’s faculty members have diverse research interests, which include structural biology, membrane dynamics, ion transport, electron transfer, nuclei acid, applied optics, computational biology, theory, cellular regulation, and imaging.

Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering graduate students engage in a rich spectrum of advanced research at the molecular, cellular, tissue, systems, and organism levels, as well as in clinical practice. The program benefits from the UC Davis life sciences research environment that incorporates the work of more than 70 faculty members in departments across campus, including biomedical engineering; mechanical engineering; radiology; neurobiology, physiology, and behavior; chemical engineering and materials science; orthopedics; bioinformatics; and mathematics.

Biochemistry, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology

The Biochemistry, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (BMCDB) Graduate Group comprises students and faculty who share an interest in studying fundamental biological problems at the organismal, cellular, and molecular levels. Experimental approaches used to address these problems range from the atomic and ultra-structural levels to model organisms that include yeast to mammals.

Avian Sciences

The Avian Sciences Graduate Group aims to provide broad training in the underlying principles of the biology of Aves. The program offers specialized advanced work in several disciplinary areas, such as nutrition, physiology, reproduction, pathology, toxicology, immunology, food science, management, ecology, genetics, incubation, environmental physiology, and developmental biology of wild and domesticated animals. A variety of wild and domesticated birds are used as experimental animals, including psittacine, raptor, passerine, aquatic, and poultry species.

Atmospheric Science

Atmospheric science is the study of the physics, chemistry, and dynamics of the atmosphere and its interrelationship with the hydrosphere and the biosphere. The graduate group in atmospheric science offers both the M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. A student may place emphasis on graduate work in one or more of the following fields: air quality meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, biometeorology, micrometeorology, numerical weather prediction, remote sensing, climate dynamics, large scale dynamics, and meso-scale meteorology.

Applied Mathematics

The Applied Mathematics Graduate Group is an interdisciplinary group of over 90 faculty and is recognized for the mathematical rigor of its programs and its dynamic research atmosphere. The program is targeted for students who are attracted to mathematics, but who also wish to apply mathematical ideas to advance our understanding of science and engineering. The program admits qualified students with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, economics, the life sciences, and related fields.

Animal Biology

Animal biology encompasses the discipline-based studies of domesticated and wild animals and animal management systems. Understanding of the multifaceted aspects of organismal biology is a critical context for interpretation of molecular, cellular, and behavioral observations. The program of study is individually tailored to meet student needs and includes a limited number of core courses to provide a foundational understanding of the animal as an integrated organism.

Animal Behavior

The Animal Behavior Graduate Group is targeted toward students who are interested in understanding the adaptive and evolutionary bases of animal behavior. Students are trained for teaching and research in a variety of disciplines, including animal science, anthropology, ecology, entomology, neurobiology, psychology, physiology, veterinary science, wildlife biology, and zoology. Students and faculty in the program conduct research using many different species—and many different perspectives.

Agricultural and Resource Economics

Students in this program study the production, distribution, and consumption of food, fiber, and energy in both developed and less-developed countries. To address these issues, the program emphasizes the development and application of rigorous economic theory and quantitative methods. Graduates become leaders in understanding and improving government policy, market performance, environmental quality, the efficiency of natural resource use, and total income and its distribution. The M.S. and joint M.S./M.B.A.

Energy Science and Technology

There is an urgent need to develop and commercialize technologies for the sustainable conversion and use of energy. This minor prepares students for careers that require training in energy science and technology, efficiency, and policy. Clean technologies and green technologies including energy are some of the fastest growing markets for new investments. Well-trained individuals in all related fields are needed to provide the level of expertise required to advance technology and policy and to satisfy national and global objectives for greater energy sustainability.

Nursing (Master's Entry Program in Nursing)

The Master’s Entry Program in Nursing prepares new nurses as leaders in quality and safety and advocates for diverse patient populations and agents of change for healthier communities. Graduates of the program are qualified to take the national licensing examination (NCLEX) for registered nurses, eligible for certification as a public health nurse and earn a Master of Science in Nursing Degree.
