Engineering students

All majors in the College of Engineering are selective and require preparatory coursework for admission. In addition to the general engineering requirements outlined in the next section, each major requires additional preparatory coursework. Applicants must complete all lower-division courses required for their major as shown on the ASSIST website as "Required for Admission." Applicants for fall 2018 should reference 2016–17 ASSIST articulation agreements, with some exceptions.

Required courses that are offered at your current campus will need to be completed by the close of spring term prior to fall enrollment at UC Davis. If required courses will not be offered at your college, you must complete them after enrolling at UC Davis. You can find California community college courses that are comparable to UC Davis courses using ASSIST.

UC Davis Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) requirements for selective majors are shown alongside preparatory coursework requirements.


General Requirements

You must earn an overall transfer GPA of 3.10 or higher to be a competitive candidate for admission to any major in the College of Engineering. Courses must be taken for a letter grade, with no grade less than C (Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level examinations may satisfy UC Davis course equivalents.).

The following UC Davis courses are common to all engineering majors:

  • Mathematics 21A/B/C/D
  • Mathematics 22A/B
  • Physics 9A/B
  • Physics 9C (except Environmental Engineering)
  • Chemistry 2A

The College of Engineering strongly recommends that the following courses be completed, if possible, before transferring:

  • Electrical Engineering: Communication 1 or 3, Engineering 6, English 3 or University Writing Program 1. 
  • Mechanical Engineering: Communication 1 or 3, Engineering 45, English 3 or University Writing Program 1.

We give the highest priority for admission to California community college applicants who have completed all of the required lower-division engineering coursework offered at the community college they attended. Lower priority is given to California community college applicants who are missing one or two of the required lower-division courses. California community college applicants will be denied admission if they are missing three or more of the required lower-division courses. Next priority is given to junior level transfer applicants from other UC campuses and other four-year institutions who meet the lower-division engineering selection requirements.

To qualify for a fall 2018 Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) in these majors, you must meet the following requirements in addition to those shown above and in the next section:

  • Achieve a minimum overall GPA of 3.30 from the time your TAG is submitted, up to the time of enrollment.
  • Achieve the minimum GPA of 3.20 in major-specific preparatory coursework that has been completed at the time the TAG application is submitted.
  • Complete UC transfer requirements in English composition (2 courses) and mathematics (1 course) by the end of fall term 2017.

    Preparation for Specific Majors

    In addition to the general requirements outlined above, each engineering major requires specific preparatory coursework. Applicants in all engineering majors must complete specific preparatory coursework requirements with a GPA of 3.20 or higher for coursework that has been completed at the time of application. If one course from the group is completed at the time the application is submitted, the grade for that one course must be B+ or better. If two or more courses from the group are completed at the time the application is submitted, the GPA for those courses combined must be a 3.20 or higher.

    ASSIST Articulation Exceptions

    Following are exceptions to the 2016-17 ASSIST articulation agreements:

    • Aerospace Science and Engineering: Physics 9D is no longer required.
    • Biochemical Engineering: Engineering Chemical & Materials Science (ENG CMS) 6 has been canceled; the major now requires the renamed course Chemical Engineering (ENG CHM) 60 or Engineering Computer Science (ENG CS) 30 or Engineering (ENGIN) 6.
    • Chemical Engineering: 
      • An option to complete Engineering (ENGIN) 17 or Engineering (ENGIN) 35 or Engineering (ENGIN) 45 is now offered.
      • Engineering Chemical and Materials Science (ENG CMS) 6 has been canceled; the major now requires the renamed course Chemical Engineering (ENG CHM) 60 or Engineering Computer Science (ENG CS) 30 or Engineering (ENGIN) 6.
    • Civil Engineering: Engineering (ENGIN) 45 is no longer required.
    • Environmental Engineering: This new major is open to fall 2018 applicants. See the courses required for admission.
    • Materials Science and Engineering: Engineering Chemical & Materials Science (ENG CMS) 6 has been canceled. The major now requires the renamed course, Chemical Engineering (ENG CHM) 60, or Engineering Computer Science (ENG CS) 30 or Engineering (ENGIN) 6.
    • Mechanical Engineering: Physics 9D is no longer recommended.
