All majors in the College of Engineering are selective and require preparatory coursework for admission. You may use ASSIST to search for courses at your California community college that are comparable to UC Davis courses.

Requirements for admission through the general application process vary from those needed to obtain a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG). To learn more about the UC Davis TAG, view additional information below and visit our TAG website.

You must earn an overall transfer GPA of 3.10 or higher to be a competitive candidate for admission to any engineering major.

Requirements to obtain a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) vary from those needed for admission through the general application process. UC Davis TAG requirements for selective majors are shown following general application requirements below, and can also be downloaded from our TAG website. An overall transfer GPA of 3.30 or higher is required to qualify for a fall 2018 Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG).

Whether planning for the general application or TAG process, courses must be taken for a letter grade, with no grade less than C (Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level examinations may satisfy UC Davis course equivalents.).

Preparation for Specific Majors

In addition to the general requirements outlined above, each engineering major requires a specific set of preparatory courses.

Applicants must complete all lower-division courses required for their specific engineering major as listed on the ASSIST website under courses "Required for Admission." Applicants for fall 2018 should view ASSIST articulation agreements by major effective during the 2016–17 academic year with the following exceptions:

  • Aerospace Science and Engineering: Physics 9D is no longer required.
  • Biochemical Engineering: Engineering Chemical & Materials Science (ENG CMS) 6 has been canceled; the major now requires the renamed course Chemical Engineering (ENG CHM) 60 or Engineering Computer Science (ENG CS) 30 or Engineering (ENGIN) 6.
  • Chemical Engineering: 
    • An option to complete Engineering (ENGIN) 17 or Engineering (ENGIN) 35 or Engineering (ENGIN) 45 is now offered.
    • Engineering Chemical and Materials Science (ENG CMS) 6 has been canceled; the major now requires the renamed course Chemical Engineering (ENG CHM) 60 or Engineering Computer Science (ENG CS) 30 or Engineering (ENGIN) 6.
  • Civil Engineering: Engineering (ENGIN) 45 is no longer required.
  • Environmental Engineering: This new major is open to fall 2018 applicants. See the courses required for admission.
  • Materials Science and Engineering: Engineering Chemical & Materials Science (ENG CMS) 6 has been canceled. The major now requires the renamed course, Chemical Engineering (ENG CHM) 60, or Engineering Computer Science (ENG CS) 30 or Engineering (ENGIN) 6.
  • Mechanical Engineering: Physics 9D is no longer recommended.

The College of Engineering strongly recommends that the courses noted below be completed if possible before transferring; students will still be required to complete these courses at UC Davis upon transferring, as they are required for graduation:

  • Electrical Engineering:  Communication 1 or 3, Engineering 6, English 3 or University Writing Program 1. 
  • Mechanical Engineering: Communication 1 or 3, Engineering 45, English 3 or University Writing Program 1.

Required coursework varies by major; however, the following UC Davis courses are common to all engineering majors:

  • Mathematics 21A/B/C/D
  • Mathematics 22A/B
  • Physics 9A/B
  • Physics 9C (except Environmental Engineering)
  • Chemistry 2A

Applicants in all engineering majors must complete all lower-division major requirements with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher for those courses completed at the time of application and through the transfer academic update filing period.  Before submitting a UC application, students must have already achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher in required lower-division major coursework completed. If one course from the group is completed at the time the application is submitted, the grade for that one course must be B+ or better. If two or more courses from the group are completed at the time the application is submitted, the GPA for those courses combined must be a 3.20 or higher. We give the highest priority for admission to California community college transfers who have completed all of the required lower-division engineering coursework offered at the community college they attended. Lower admission priority is given to community college applicants who are missing one or two of the required lower-division courses. Community college applicants will be denied admission if they are missing three or more of the required lower-division courses. Next priority is given to junior level transfers from other UC campuses and other four-year institutions in and out of state who meet the lower-division engineering selection requirements.

To qualify for a fall 2018 Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) in these majors, you must complete the requirements stated above with the following variances:
  • Complete UC transfer requirements in the areas of English composition (2 courses) and mathematics (1 course) by the end of fall term 2017.
  • Complete all required units and major preparatory courses by the end of spring term prior to fall enrollment.
  • Meet or exceed the minimum overall GPA of 3.30 from the time your TAG is submitted up to the time of enrollment.
  • Complete all lower-division major requirements with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Before submitting a TAG, you must have already achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher in required lower-division major coursework completed. If one course from the group is completed at the time the TAG is submitted, the grade for that one course must be B+ or better. If two or more courses from the group are completed at the time the TAG is submitted, the GPA for those courses combined must be a 3.20 or higher.
