VOICES OF AUTHORITY

About 120 people gathered in Shields Library last week to get a feel for the range and high quality of writing at UC Davis. The 13th annual Campus Authors Celebration included a display of about 120 new books. Thirteen of the authors stood before the audience, often prompting laughs, as they offered anecdotes from their writing experiences -- lasting anywhere from a month to 10 years or more. "These authors enrich our lives by sharing their talents," Provost Virginia Hinshaw noted, thanking them for taking the risk inherent in sharing one's passions with the world as she helped to open the Oct. 21 event. Topics varied widely, from Miroslava Chavez-Garcia's history of Chicanas in California to Dean Simonton's take on cultivating creativity in science. Andrew Waterhouse discussed his text on wine color, noting that research shows the redder the wine, the better people rate its taste. And Lucy Corin, below, of English read an excerpt from her novel Everyday Psychokillers: A History for Girls. At right, Robert Avalos of the Division of Biologi-cal Sciences thumbs through some of the books on display. For more, see http://libweb2.ucdavis.edu/dept/admin/campus-authors/.
