UC Davis Bookstore Opens a Branch in Sacramento

A new and expanded University of California, Davis, bookstore will open its doors next month in Sacramento, offering a wide variety of books, reference works and merchandise. The 6,500 square-foot branch facility at 2270 Stockton Blvd. will become a full-service bookstore, containing the largest collection of health science books in Northern California. "The bookstore will serve not only the UC Davis Medical Center, but also the Sacramento community," said Chuck Kratochvil, bookstore manager. "In addition to a wide variety of books, customers can purchase medical equipment and supplies, computers, clothing, gifts, greeting cards, stationery, film, magazines, and health and beauty products." Administrators at both the medical center in Sacramento and those on campus in Davis want to provide a community resource that benefits the community living near the hospital, according to Kratochvil. "By expanding the services and converting it to a general bookstore, we make it more appealing to a greater number of people," Kratochvil said. The new location is three blocks closer to the medical center than the former bookstore site at 2601 Stockton Blvd. and is approximately two times larger. The property at 2270 Stockton is owned by Ken Fahn, of Sacramento, who is leasing both the land and building to the university. The building formerly housed the offices of the UC Davis Family Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Program. The building is being redesigned by Sacramento architects Hoshida & Reyes, and the contractor for the renovated facility is Eli James, also of Sacramento. The cost for the project is estimated to be $250,000. The former bookstore facility is scheduled for demolition.
