The Three Dot Column

Make that a baker's dozen--the number of university presidents and chancellors produced by the Davis campus, that is. Phil Dubois is the latest former Davisite to be tapped for academe's top job. He'll leave his post as provost at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte April 1 to assume the presidency of the University of Wyoming. "Leave it to Phil to pick the highest campus," teased Davis colleague Lor Shepard, noting UW's Web page claim "to be the highest major university in the nation" at an elevation of 7,200 feet. Phil wore several hats while here: poli sci prof, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, executive associate dean in L&S--and '72 alum.... Folks from the University of Central Oklahoma returned after Thanksgiving from an Aggie trouncing in the national semifinals with a smile on their faces, thanks to a little hospitality "Davis style." The visiting athletic director and some friends were dining at Soga's one evening when their apparel--U of Central Oklahoma sweatshirts--caught the eye of Charlie Soderquist, energetic president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association (not to mention a new regent). Soderquist not only paid for their dinner but invited them to the pre-game barbecue at alum Warren Mooney's house.... Ever wonder what is considered "agro art?" Tune in to KVIE Channel 6 at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 12 and our very own maestro of design, Dolph Gotelli, will explain it all on "California Heartland." The environmental design professor, whose latest research focuses on presentation of agricultural products, caught the eye of the "Heartland" producer because of his participation in the fall Newcastle Mandarin Festival (that's as in oranges, not Chinese high public officials, despite the dragon exhibit at the Design Gallery this month).... Just because we think it's clever, we'll repeat the winning entry to the Women's Resources and Research Center's "Name That Bookcart Contest." Barbara Molloy, facilities manager for the environmental design department, came up with "Helga on Wheels."... When you get awards, sometimes you also have to put up with the roast. That's what happened to Gina Kelsch, associate vice chancellor for university relations, last month in San Diego when she received a district tribute award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. It was revealed during the tribute that in her college years, Gina wrestled at Cal State Fullerton in the 104-pound class and was the first and only woman wrestler ever to suit up for the alumni vs. the varsity wrestle-off. ... Hey, is there space in the Rec Hall trophy room for another Sears Directors' Cup Trophy--you know, to match the $35,000 Waterford Crystal cup we received last summer? Our Aggie teams are at the top of the fall-sports standings for the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division II. Now, all we have to do is keep up the good work for another two quarters.
