Misconduct, Lies Scandal -- NOT!

Fewer jobs and less research money might tempt a researcher toaccept questionable data, publish results prematurely or worse. To prevent future scientists from joining the small but growing scandal-ridden ranks, the UC Davis graduate studies division and the genetics graduate program have launched an ethics class beginning this term. The two-hour course is called "Integrity and Professionalism: Preparing Graduate Students for the 21st Century." More practical than philosophical, the class aims to help budding scientists identify and build upon their personal values. "The integrity of your actions has to be based upon a personal value system," says instructor John Yoder, an associate professor of genetics in the Department of Vegetable Crops. "In the push to succeed," Yoder says, "it is critical to keep personal principles and accountability in mind; otherwise, your value system collapses."
