Ethnic Graduation Ceremonies

Three special graduation celebrations honoring underrepresented ethnic minorities will be held Saturday, June 15, in addition to the traditional commencement programs at UC Davis. Recreation Hall will be the site of the sixth annual African American celebration. More than 90 African American graduating seniors will be honored at the event, which begins at 7 p.m. The program will include music, African dance, choir performances, the UC Davis Black Repertory Dance Troupe and speaker Ronald Johnson, currently a consultant with the California education department. Across campus in Freeborn Hall, the Chicano/Latino celebration will honor 75 graduating seniors and 19 graduate students beginning at 7 p.m. The three-hour event will include a dinner, a cultural celebration and featured speaker Bob Jiminez, a senior news correspondent with KCBS television in Los Angeles and a UC Davis alumnus. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Theatre, the Filipino celebration will recognize 42 graduating seniors. Cultural performances and a talk by Tani Cantil, a Sacramento municipal court judge and a UC Davis alumna, will highlight the 31/2 hour evening program.
