A World of Music Comes Home to the Quad

World music and dance from Cuba, Mali and Brazil will light up the stage in July and August during UC Davis Presents' SummerMusic '99, a series of free outdoor concerts on the Quad. All three concerts, sponsored by UC Davis Summer Sessions and Dos Coyotes Border Café, begin at 7:30 p.m. Ban Rra Rra, a music and dance ensemble from Cuba specializing in Afro-Cuban-Haitian cultural traditions, begins the series Friday, July 23. The 13 members of the company are descendants of Haitians who fled to Cuba during Haiti's revolution, and are making their first tour of the United States. The company performs such traditional dances and styles as Tajona, Gagá and Tumba Francesa, with a particular emphasis on the Haitian spiritual tradition of Vodú. The series continues on Tuesday, Aug. 3, with a performance by singer-guitarist Habib Koité from Mali. His albums include Muso Ko and Ma Ya. Koité and his band merge traditional west African styles and instruments with the modern sounds of guitars and harmonica into a unique sound. SummerMusic '99 concludes on Thursday, Aug. 19, with a performance by Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist Vinicius Cantuária and his band. With the help of his four-piece band--guitar, cello, trumpet and drums--Cantuaria blends traditional Brazilian rhythms and melodies with jazz.
