Prominent leaders from around the world will gather at the University of California, Davis, Nov. 15 and 16 for the Governors’ Global Climate Summit 3: Building the Green Economy.

The summit will take place at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts and in nearby campus venues.

“I’m proud that we can bring together world-renowned leaders to collaborate on such important issues that affect us all," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said. "There is no better way to address the devastating effect that climate change has on our environment and our economy than by building these partnerships around the globe and influencing the global climate movement.”

Co-hosted by Schwarzenegger in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme and United Nations Environment Programme and co-sponsored by UC Davis, the summit will continue to build subnational collaboration on policies and strategies to stimulate economic growth, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, create green jobs, promote clean energy solutions and reduce greenhouse gas pollution.

Other summit co-hosts include Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm; Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire; Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle; and Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski.

Other notable participants include Nobel Prize winner Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; British Prime Minister David Cameron; British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell; Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia of Cebu, Philippines; Vice Gov. He Duanqi of Yunnan, China; Director General Gao Guangsheng of the Climate Division of the National Development Reform Commission in China; Ambassador Richard Jones, deputy director of the International Energy Agency in Paris, France; Pavan Sukhdev, head of the Green Economy Initiative, United Nations Environment Programme; Gov. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan of Delta State, Nigeria; and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.

Award-winning Hollywood producer and director James Cameron and actor Harrison Ford will also participate.

UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi will join Schwarzenegger and former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz in welcoming summit-goers at a Monday morning opening ceremony. UC Davis Graduate School of Management Dean Steven Currall will give the welcome address at a 10 a.m. Tuesday session, "Capitalizing the Green Dream."

“This summit is coming to UC Davis at an ideal time for the state, the nation and the world," Katehi said. "At our university, we have a vision to be a leader in sustainability and an economic engine that drives a clean-energy future. We are now in the midst of shaping a clean-energy innovation hub in the Sacramento-San Francisco Bay Area. The momentum continues to build, and the summit helps draw attention to the skills and expertise of our global campus.”

Last year, the governor and U.N. officials welcomed more than 1,200 attendees from more than 70 states, provinces and countries to the Governors’ Global Climate Summit 2 in Los Angeles to partner on ways to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create a healthier environment and build green economies.

This year’s summit will also provide subnational leaders the opportunity to influence the positions of their national governments in advance of the United Nations COP 16 meeting in Cancun in December.

UC Davis students who are committed to environmental sciences, policy and issues are also invited to attend the summit free of charge. Interested students should go to http://conferences.ucdavis.edu/ggcs3_student.
