University of Redlands AD Chosen as UC Davis Athletic Director

Greg Warzecka, director of athletics and physical education at University of Redlands, has been selected as director of athletics at the University of California, Davis, effective Aug. 1. Warzecka, 44, succeeds Keith Williams, UC Davis associate professor of exercise science who has served as acting athletic director since 1992. More than 115 candidates were considered in the search, which began last February. In his new post at UC Davis, Warzecka will oversee an intercollegiate athletics program of currently nine sports for women and eleven sports for men, intramural sports, sports clubs and sports camps. Most of UC Davis' intercollegiate teams compete in the Northern California Athletic Conference and Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Warzecka has served as director of athletics and physical education at University of Redlands since 1989, overseeing 19 sports for men and women and a wide variety of intramural and club sport activities. Since 1990, the University of Redlands athletics program has been one of the most successful Division III programs on the West Coast, producing nationally ranked teams and winning 11 conference championships. "I'm delighted that Greg has accepted the position," said Bob Franks, UC Davis acting vice chancellor for student affairs. "He understands and is very wedded philosophically to the idea of student-athlete and teacher-coach. He has teaching, coaching and administrative experience and has been a coach and administrator at all three divisions of the NCAA. He has excellent communication skills, is a team-builder, understands budgeting and comes from a program that offers a wide array of competitive opportunities for men and women athletes. I fully expect him to be popular with students, academics, coaches and alumni." Franks praised Williams for his "dedicated service through very tumultuous and difficult times as ICA was forced to adjust to substantially reduced resources." Warzecka said he was "honored and privileged to be a part of UC Davis athletics. The reputation of Davis athletically and academically is outstanding and is what has drawn me back to the University of California. I look forward to becoming part of the UC Davis team." From 1985 till he joined University of Redlands, Warzecka served as director of men's athletics, assistant chair of the physical education department and head baseball coach at the University of Chicago, a NCAA Division III program. From 1982 to 1985, he was head baseball coach and an instructor for San Francisco State University's Division II program. He gained Division I experience at the University of California, Berkeley, as assistant baseball coach from 1977 to 1982 and as head junior varsity baseball coach from 1974 to 1975. In between, he was head baseball coach and an instructor at Piedmont High School. He has served as chair of the Athletic Directors' Committee of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and member of the NCAA Division II West Region Baseball Advisory Committee, the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
