UN Ambassador to Speak at Law School Commencement

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson will deliver the University of California, Davis, law school commencement address at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24. Richardson, a former congressman from New Mexico, was named to his post by President Clinton last December. He is a member of the president's cabinet and is also a member of the National Security Council. During his term in Congress, to which he was re-elected seven times, Richardson held one of the highest ranking posts in the House Democratic leadership. He was a member of the Resources Committee, the Commerce Committee, the Intelligence Committee and the Helsinki Commission on Human Rights. Richardson has served as a diplomatic "trouble-shooter," working to free hostages in several countries including Burma, Iraq, North Korea and Sudan. This week President Clinton dispatched Richardson to Zaire to try to resolve the growing conflicts there. Last year, he held a historic meeting with Fidel Castro during which he successfully negotiated the release of three political prisoners. Richardson received his bachelor's degree from Tufts University and a master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. The law school's 29th commencement ceremony will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon outdoors in the UC Davis Health Sciences Quadrangle. If it rains, the ceremony will be moved indoors to Freeborn Hall, with overflow seating to be in Room 1100 of the Social Sciences and Humanities Building. Tickets are required for this year's ceremony. To reserve tickets, please contact the law school's development, alumni and public relations office by Wednesday, May 14, at (916) 752-6679 or send an e-mail message to alumni@lawadmin.ucdavis.edu. Rex Perschbacher, law school associate dean, will give welcoming remarks and present the Law School Medal, which goes to the top student in the graduating class. Other speakers during the ceremony will include faculty speaker Professor Evelyn Lewis and student speakers Bo deRosa and Larry Mathews. A reception for the 165 graduating students and their families will be held following the ceremony at the UC Davis University Club.
