JUDITH STERN Professor, Nutrition and Internal Medicine "New Treatments for Obesity: Public Policy Implications" Stern, one of the nation's leading obesity researchers and a member of the National Institute of Medicine, will discuss policy issues related to the latest in therapies for obesity. Her research has ranged from studies of adipose tissue metabolism to food-intake controls to the role of exercise in weight control. She also maintains an active interest in public health policy, especially with respect to obesity treatment, and in the role of nutrition in managing hypertension and type 2 diabetes. She chaired the National Institute of Medicine's 1994 committee charged with developing criteria for evaluating various weight-control methods and is a member of the advisory board of former Surgeon Gen. C. Everett Koop's "Shape Up America" campaign.
