Legislative Leaders Invited to Impart Their Views on California Higher Education

UC Davis has invited some of the Legislature's most esteemed emeriti to tell us what they think about the university. For the first event of this year's Chancellor's Forum on the Future, Tom Hannigan, a former assemblyman who represented parts of Yolo, Solano and Sacramento counties for 18 years, will speak at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the University Club. His speech will be titled "A View From the 'Real World' or Learning to Live Without a Vote." Hannigan was a powerful force in the state as the Democratic majority leader under Speaker Willie Brown. He left the Assembly last fall because of term limits. While in office, he made an impact on educational reform and financing, fiscal policies, tax issues and local government services. He chaired the Revenue and Taxation Committee and served on the conference committee that makes the final decisions on the state budget. Also speaking this spring will be Phil Isenberg, a 14-year member of the state Assembly who represented Sacramento until he stepped down this last year due to term limits. The date and topic of Isenberg's speech is being finalized. These forums, which are open to the campus community, have been created this year to help the campus understand the Legislature and its decisions. "These were some of the smartest, hardest-working and most constructive members of the Legislature," says Marj Dickinson, director of government and community relations. "They have been observing the university closely. They can help us understand what decision-makers' expectations and perceptions are."
