Harrison Dunning, an environmental law professor in the School of Law, received the school's 1996 William A. Rutter Distinguished Teaching Award. The award was established in 1980 by William and Sally Rutter and includes an award of $5,000. Dunning was nominated to receive the award by students at the school. Mark Francis, professor and chair of the Landscape Architecture Program has been appointed by U. S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman to serve a three-year term as a member of the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council. Established by Congress in 1991, the council establishes policy and advises on funding for urban forestry and community greening projects and research. Francis also was recently appointed to the Western Regional Advisory Board of the Trust for Public Land. The American Physiological Society has selected Barbara Horwitz, professor and chair of the Section of Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, to receive the Arthur C. Guyton Physiology Teacher of the Year Award. The award includes an honorarium of $1,000. Senior Public Information Representative Carol Cruzan Morton is the co-winner of a silver award in media relations from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's District VIII. Morton and University of Oregon colleague Ross West were cited for their collaborative work on "Experts Disagree on Secret Parapsychology Research," which involved statistical work by UC Davis Professor Jessica Utts. Jeremy Quastel, an assistant professor in mathematics, has been named a recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship for 1996-1998. Each year 100 Sloan fellowships are awarded in six fields, including mathematics. These awards carry a grant of $35,000. The American Water Resources Association has named Miguel Marino, professor of land, air and water resources, as a fellow. Over the past 25 years, Marino has been active in research and teaching in hydrology and water resources. He has developed optimization models for planning, managing and operating water resource systems such as the California Central Valley Project and systems in Chile, Iran, Korea, Mexico and China. Geology professor Eldridge Moores has been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science by the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. The award is recognition for Moores' extraordinary contributions to earth science and to science education. UC Davis Presents was recently honored with three Crystal Awards and one Certificate of Merit recently at the 1995 Crystal Awards Program. UC Davis Presents staff participating in these projects included Dave Webb, director of marketing and communications, and Avi Hangad, former graphic designer. The awards were in the categories of black and white full-page ad, color full-page ad, and special one-time publication. The Certificate of Merit was awarded in the brochure category. Zuhair Munir, a professor of chemical engineering and materials science, and associate dean for graduate affairs in the College of Engineering, is a new member of the International Academy of Ceramics. He is cited for his work in combustion synthesis. Individuals who have made an internationally renowned contribution to the advancement of ceramic science and technology are elected to the academy. Tom Sallee, professor of mathematics, will receive the 1996 Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching, presented by the Northern California Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Recipients of the award are recognized for their extraordinary success in teaching, influence in mathematics education beyond their own institution and their ability to foster curiosity and generate excitement about mathematics. The California Dietetic Association has announced that Judith Stern, professor of nutrition, will receive its Excellence in Research Award for 1996. The award honors members for outstanding professional excellence in research. Mark Kittleson, a professor of medicine and epidemiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, was selected by the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University to present this year's Buchanan Lecture. The Buchanan Lecture is an endowed lecture and the first named lecture at the College. Kittleson's lecture topic was entitled "Investigations into the Etiology and Definitive Therapy of Canine and Feline Cardiomyopathies."
