Officials will sign a five-year agreement to increase by 6 percent each year the number of Elk Grove graduates attending UC campuses. A "Reservation for College" program, beginning in the fourth grade, will focus on students in the Valley High School region, where there is a history of low college attendance. When: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 Where: John Reith Elementary School, 8401 Valley Lark Drive, Sacramento Visuals: * Media will be invited inside two fourth-grade classrooms to talk to students about their desires to attend college and what the partnership will mean for their future success. * Speaking briefly and available for interviews will be Elk Grove Superintendent Dave Gordon, UC Davis Chancellor Larry N. Vanderhoef, John Reith Principal Cynthia DeLuz, Elk Grove School Board President Susan Aronson, Valley High School student Danielle Bryant and her mother. Background: The Elk Grove Unified-UC Davis partnership expands upon programs already under way at both institutions. The Elk Grove school board has made college preparation and eligibility a top priority, and two years ago entered a successful partnership with CSU Sacramento that has increased the number of graduates attending CSUS by 62 percent. The UC Davis partnership expands the district's efforts to the elementary level, and five elementary schools in the Valley High region will begin college preparatory curriculum in the fourth grade. The Elk Grove agreement adds to UC Davis' growing roster of school/university partnerships, with plans under way to add districts throughout the region. The university's goal is to raise the level of college preparedness and eligibility for all students with numerous programs that provide support to teachers, administrators, counselors, students and their families.
