Comments are sought as the UC Office of the President proposes to extend the Supplement to Military Pay to June 30, 2005. The program pays the difference between an employee-reservist's military and university pay if the employee is called to active duty due to the war on terrorism.

The proposal is available on the Web at http://www.hr.ucdavis.edu/Policy/Development.

Comments are due by June 8.

Center hosts survivors day

The UC Davis Cancer Center will host National Cancer Survivors Day on Saturday, June 5.

The event, to take place 9-11 a.m. at the Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivors Park on Stockton Boulevard, will consist of a one-mile walk and activities including a climbing wall, dove release, survivor stories and exhibits by local cancer support groups.

The registration fee is $10 for adults or $5 for seniors. There is no cost for children. The fee includes a T-shirt and breakfast. Event-day registration runs 8-8:55 a.m.

Speedboat raffle set for Thursday

UC Davis Athletics will hold a public event at 10 a.m. Thursday in Toomey Courtyard to choose the winner of a 21-foot Mercury MerCruiser speedboat. The boat is being raffled to benefit athletics and the UC Davis School of Law.

Raffle tickets have been selling for $100 each for the package, which includes a trailer and is valued at about $30,000. Tickets are still available. For details or to purchase a ticket call (530) 752-2699.

Speaker to discuss world of computer networks

Bernardo Huberman, senior fellow and director of the Information Dynamics Lab at Hewlett Packard Laboratories, will speak 4-6 p.m. June 10, in 226 Wellman Hall. His talk, "Information Dynamics in a Networked World," is part of the Office of Research's new Distinguished Lecture Series.

Huberman will describe new mechanisms for identifying communities of practice within large networks and for helping the spread of information in those communities.

Autism explored in talk

The M.I.N.D. Institute will host Christopher Gillberg, professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Goteborg and the University of London, on June 9, at the M.I.N.D. Institute, 2825 50th St., Sacramento, as the final speaker in this year's Distinguished Lecturer Series.

Gillberg is a leading international researcher on autism spectrum disorders and other neuropsychiatric disorders of early childhood. He will present two lectures. During his technical presentation at 4 p.m., he will evaluate what is known about the neurobiology of autism. At 6:30 p.m., he will discuss the epidemiology, risk factors, outcome and intervention for non-autistic-disorder cases of autism spectrum disorders. Both sessions are free and open to the public.
