1999 Fall Conference Recommendations

Participants at the UC Davis Chancellor's Fall Conference, split into three discipline-related work groups, delivered recommendations for strengthening academic research. Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies and Social Sciences Establish a task force to consider the research needs of the divisions of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies and of Social Sciences, including new facilities, graduate fellowships and time for creative activity Increase funding for technical support Boost funding for the Davis Humanities Institute and the Institute of Governmental Affairs Create a liaison in the Office of Research and place representatives on campus resource allocation committees Develop measures to achieve "co-prosperity" for the two divisions while maintaining academic freedom Biological and Agricultural Sciences, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine Streamline construction of new laboratories and core facilities Establish parity across departments to ensure equal access and ability to use funds from "percent effort" on grants Increase the size and independence of the Office of Research, determining need for a director of research for humanities and increasing legal counsel Strategically invest in core facilities, tapping such outside resources as industry and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and including subsidized animal care Develop infrastructure to facilitate university-industry interaction, emphasizing both cutting-edge research and graduate student training Implement the recommendations of the Task Force on Graduate Student Support Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Identify best practices at UC campuses and elsewhere to streamline research decisions and day-to-day operations Build high-quality research space to recruit excellent faculty, and provide facilities, equipment and staff support Hire professional fund-raisers of a number and caliber appropriate to a major university, and raise funds from companies hiring a large percentage of UC Davis graduates Improve national rankings by completing forms correctly, providing information to those influencing the rankings and organizing efforts to nominate best scholars for honors, prizes, national academy memberships Increase portion of indirect costs returned to a project's principal investigator and research unit
