Mayan backstrap weavers Bertina Lopez de Martin and her daughter Melisa, 12, set up their looms in front of Walker Hall last week for a demonstration for Design 142B, World Textiles: Western Hempishere. The visitors hail from Santa Catarina de Palopo, Guatemala. Assistant Professor Ann Savageau, inset, invited them here to demonstrate the making of weft brocade fabric, which is used in the huipil, a traditional blouse for Mayan women. Native American Studies doctoral student Janferie Stone lectured on this ancient tradition and its role in Mayan culture. Bertina Lopez de Martin is wearing a traditional Mayan woman's headdress, huipil and skirt, and Melisa is wearing the same, without the headdress. UC Davis' Hemispheric Institute on the Americas, and the Women's Resources and Research Center sponsored the weaving program.
