RECREATION: New summer youth camps; early sign-ups begin

Campus Recreation announced new balance in its summer youth programs, with the addition of four camps: Theatre, Cooking, Band and Leaders in Training.

They join traditional offerings such as Rectopia, arts and crafts, dance and exercise, horseback riding, outdoor adventures and sports-related camps. Also, Kids, Farms and Food is back from last summer.

Camps for children and teens are scheduled from June 21 to Aug. 20. Swimming lessons begin earlier, with a spring session (May 3-27), to be followed by five two-week sessions from June 14 to Aug. 19.

“I am especially excited by the new additions and collaborations with other campus departments,” said Marshall Lawlor, coordinator of Youth Programs. The Band Camp, for example, is a collaboration between Campus Rec and the California Aggie Marching Band.

Registration is now being accepted by mail and fax. Parents and guardians who choose this option are advised to get their forms in by March 20; this lets them skip the in-person sign-up session and potential waiting lines.

The March 20 kickoff is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rec Pool Lodge, at the northwest corner of Hutchison Drive and La Rue Road.

Officials said placement in camps will begin with the start of in-person registration at 10 a.m. March 20. For any camp that fills up, a waiting list will be established.

Phone-in registration is set to begin at 8 a.m. March 22, at (530) 754-4304. There is no online registration at this time, though such a system is in development.

The summer Youth Programs Guide, including registration form, is available online.

What’s up for summer? Activities Faire beckons

Campus Recreation and the city of Davis Community Services Department are teaming again for the Children’s Summer Activities Faire. This year’s event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 13 at the Farmers Market at Central Park, Second and C streets.

The fair is intended to assist parents in finding summer programs for their children, said Holly Bates, assistant director of Campus Rec Youth Programs.

As a prelude to summer fun, the activities fair — free of charge — will include button making, dancing and the “Red Light-Green Light” game, organizers said.
