  • Preorders due for 2017-18 campus poster calendar
  • Regents name provost, chief compliance officer

Paving is underway this week on Old Davis Road between Interstate 80 and the roundabout near La Rue Road. In the meantime, this stretch of Old Davis Road remains closed in both directions — as it has been since July 8 — to allow for the road's reconstruction.

The closure is 24 hours a day and is scheduled to last through Sunday (July 30), as the contractor aims to reopen the road the next day, July 31.

Detour: Campus officials ask staff and faculty who use the south entry to use Hutchison Drive via Highway 113 instead. The roundabout remains open, so, you can take Hutchison to La Rue to the roundabout, to get to Mrak Hall, the Buehler Alumni Center and other buildings in the vicinity, as well as the Gateway Parking Structure.

UC Learning Center goes offline Friday, for 9 days

The UC Learning Center is scheduled to be offline for nine days starting at 5 p.m. this Friday (July 28) and continuing until Aug. 7. So, if you have a training or trainings to complete during that period, you’ll need to get it done this week.

The UC Office of the President will use the down time to upgrade the system; it will have a more contemporary interface and will be compatible with all web browsers. Users will not lose any of the data they had in the system prior to the upgrade.

Faculty leaders sought for Healthy Campus Network

A UC Davis steering committee has identified focus areas in its efforts to build a “Healthy Campus Network” for staff, faculty and students, and is seeking faculty members to join staff members as co-leads of each focus area.

The focus areas are: physical activity, nutrition, built environment, and mental and emotional well-being.

Healthy Campus Network, a systemwide effort, is an outgrowth of UC’s Global Food Initiative, established in 2014, with goals that include proposing a plan to work with each UC location to address the need for a strong, sustainable campus-coordinating structure “to make UC the healthiest place to work, learn and live.”

Kelly Ratliff, who leads UC Davis Finance, Operations and Administration, appointed the Healthy Campus Steering Committee, with faculty, staff and student representation. It has been meeting since March.

Faculty members interested in serving as Healthy Campus Network focus area co-leads are asked to contact Stacey Brezing by email.

Distinguished Professor Marc Schenker, a physician in the Department of Public Health Sciences, is scheduled to speak at the United Nations on Wednesday (July 26) on the topic of health care disparities among migrant workers.

He will be participating in a panel discussion “Human Rights of All Immigrants,” which also will address social inclusion, cohesion and all forms of discrimination including racism, xenophobia and intolerance. The panel, in turn, is part of a multistakeholder hearing on international migration, in conjunction with UN consultations on a global compact for migration.

The Board of Regents last week approved the following appointments:

  • Michael Brown mugshot

Michael T. Brown, professor and administrator at UC Santa Barbara and former chair of the UC Academic Senate, as systemwide provost and executive vice president of Academic Affairs. He will take up his new role Sept. 5, succeeding Aimée Dorr, who assumed the position in 2012 and is now retiring after serving the university for 36 years. UC Davis Professor Jim Chalfant, chair of the UC Academic Senate and a member of the search committee, praised outgoing Provost Dorr for setting “a very high standard as an advocate for preserving UC’s academic excellence and in working very closely with the Academic Senate,” and said Brown “brings the same commitment to shared governance and the academic mission.” Read more in this news release from the UC Office of the President.

  • Alexander A. Bustamante, as senior vice president and chief compliance and audit officer in the UC Office of the President. Bustamante, a graduate of UC Berkeley, will take up his new post on Sept. 5. He succeeds Sheryl Vacca, who left the university last year. John Lohse has held the position on an interim basis since November 2016. Bustamonte is coming to UCOP from the Los Angeles Police Department, where he has served since 2011 as inspector general, responsible for providing independent oversight of the department and its approximately 12,000 employees.
