Early-career faculty to get $25,000 fellowship

The campus has created a new $25,000 award for early-career faculty members called the Chancellor's Fellowship.

Funded by the Chancellor's Club, the award's purpose is to honor the achievements of outstanding faculty members early in the careers.

"It is important to honor and celebrate the accomplishments and future potential of our early-career faculty members," said Barry Klein, vice provost for academic personnel.

"We believe that the Chancellor's Fellows Program will be a major step in accomplishing that goal. It will also benefit our campus by enhancing our ability to hire and retain many of the most sought -after early-career faculty across the many disciplines on our campus."

Those who are selected will receive the one-time award of $25,000 and the title of Chancellor's Fellow for five years. These one-time awards may be used in support of research, teaching and service activities, such as graduate student stipends or for travel.

Academic Senate members from all schools and colleges are eligible if they have achieved tenure and been resident on the Davis campus for at least a year before the nomination deadline and if they are within three years of having achieved tenure from UC Davis or elsewhere by that same deadline date.

Potential fellows are to be nominated by the UC Davis deans, who can submit up to two names each year.

"Only those candidates whose credentials would place them among the top of their peer group should be nominated," says the call for nominations. Some of the best indicators of academic excellence are the same used in the merit and promotion process in assessing scholarship and teaching -- an important book or journal publications, special awards, invitations to speak at major meetings, the establishment of a significant research program that has resulted in substantial extramural funding and special accomplishments in teaching.

Nominations will be evaluated by a committee appointed by the chancellor.

It is expected that the first awards will be made next academic year, Klein said.
