Counselors Take Seriously Feelings Stirred by Cartoon

Fear. Confusion. Anger. Hurt. Dismay. Helplessness. Frustration. These are a few of the emotional responses students and faculty and staff members have voiced following the publication of a controversial cartoon in The California Aggie. Since that time, the campus has learned that the concerns that gave rise to these strong feelings are much broader and deeper than a single cartoon. While the campus community grapples with the substance of these concerns, it must also be attentive to the feelings that these issues generate and find healthy and empowering ways to manage these feelings, according to a group of campus multicultural-education and counseling providers convened by Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Janet Gong. "As individuals and as a campus community, we can choose to use this point in time to better understand ourselves and one another and to foster a more positive campus climate. We want to be of the most help we can, so let us know what you need and want," Gong said. Listed below are some of the people available to listen to and talk with campus community members about their emotional reactions to the events of the past few weeks.
