Coroner and police probe cause of campus student death

A campus memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, in 194 Chemistry for undergraduate student Andrew Wieman, 20, of Eureka.

His body was found at his fraternity house Jan. 4. The UC Davis police department and the Yolo County Coroner's Office continue to investigate the death.

Wieman was a third-year student majoring in managerial economics.

The coroner's of-fice conducted an autopsy on Friday, Jan. 5, determining the cause of death to be stab wounds to the neck and chest. UC Davis Police Capt. Rita Spaur said a note possibly written by Wieman and found at the scene is being examined by the California Depart-ment of Justice.

"We are deeply sorrowed at the news of Andrew's death and extend our condolences to his family and friends," said Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Carol Wall.

Spaur said Wieman's body was found in his room at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house on campus.

UC Davis police and fire departments and an ambulance responded about 1:10 p.m. Thursday to a 911 call from a fraternity member. Spaur said fraternity members, concerned that Wieman had failed to show up for class on the first day of instruction for the winter quarter, had gone looking for him.

Approximately 23 fraternity members live in the house, which is privately owned and managed; the fraternity chapter has about 70 members.

Student affairs staff were on site last week to offer assistance, and Counseling Center staff met with a fraternity representative Friday morning.

A meeting was scheduled early this week for the counseling staff to further encourage the fraternity members to draw on the campus resources available to them.

The Counseling Center, staffed by psychologists and other mental health professionals, offers drop-in and by- appointment counseling be-tween 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The memorial service will be held by his Kappa Sigma fraternity brothers. Those who wish to remember Wieman are invited to atttend.Coroner, police probe cause of
