Chancellor will look ahead in convocation speech

How can UC Davis realize the benefits of creativity during a time of change?

Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef will address this question and its implications for faculty, staff and students at the annual Fall Convocation at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Freeborn Hall.

In "Growth: Meeting the Challenge in the Next Decade," Vanderhoef will discuss how the impact of growth will affect the future quality of the campus and the need to recruit and retain the best and brightest faculty and staff necessary to discharge the university’s mission of research, instruction and public service with excellence.

The campus and surrounding community are invited to attend the hourlong program.

Before the chancellor gives his address, featured speaker Charlie Soderquist will talk about the new relationships between private enterprise and the campus.

Soderquist, an alumnus and president of Technology Development Center, is heavily involved in volunteer activities at UC Davis. He is board chair for UC Davis Connect, a program dedicated to focusing the resources of the University of California and the business community on the development of new business ventures in the Sacramento region. He also has been involved in the campus advisory committee that proposed the enterprise campus (research park).

The former president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, Soderquist is volunteer chair for the $12 million fund-raising campaign for the UC Davis Tahoe Research Center.

The UCD Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Professor Kern Holoman, will play "Hungarian March" from Berlioz’s Damnation de Faust and a selection from Handel’s Water Music, as well as the "Hail to California" alma mater.

Following the convocation, a reception for the community will be held on the Freeborn patio. Fall classes begin Sept. 25.
