Costumes here and there in Davis and at UC Davis

Davis Musical Theatre Company will hold its annual costume sale this weekend where shoppers can browse the inventory from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 6 and 7.

The sale happens at The Jean Henderson Performing Arts Center, is at 607 Peña Drive, Davis.

And coming soon, beginning Oct. 17, UC Davis offers its costumes. This Halloween transform yourself by visiting The Enchanted Cellar, a costume rental service operated by the UC Davis College of Letters and Science’s Department of Theatre and Dance.

The collection features inspired by “Game of Thrones,” “Harry Potter,” “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” characters along with movie stars and superheroes, animated favorites, fairies, and original Steampunk. Many iconic fashion periods are represented too, such as the 1920s, Victorian England and the French Court of Marie Antoinette.

“We have kits starting at $35 which include all accessories head-to-toe,” said Roxanne Femling, director of the costume shop. “Or people can make an individual appointment with one of our costume consultants who will make up a kit from our stock and customers can put together their own character. Come have fun with it!”

The Enchanted Cellar is located in Room 17 on the lower level of Wright Hall, on campus near the Ann E. Pitzer Center. Although appointments are preferred, walk-in hours are Oct. 17-19 and 24-26 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Oct. 29-31 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday Oct. 20 and 27 are by appointment only and must be booked 24 hours in advance.

To set up an appointment, please contact Roxanne Femling at rcfemling@ucdavis.edu or call 530-752-0740. Or check us out on Facebook at “The Enchanted Cellar Costume Rentals.”

Paint a mural Oct. 12-14

Looking ahead to next weekend, UC Davis graduate and mural artist Danielle Fodor invites the community to come help her paint an intersection mural in Davis. Help create a gigantic intersection mural on the bike/ped pathway of the North Davis Greenbelt and onto Hacienda Avenue on Oct. 12-14. “I've been working on this project for several months, and I'm really excited to share the grand finale—PAINT WEEKEND—with you,” she writes.

All ages are welcome at the free painting party—with live music and food—to create public art and community.

No skill needed, because the mural will be painted on with big brushes and rollers, as a gigantic paint by number.

Needed are more than 100 Saturday painters—and 40-plus super volunteers Friday through Sunday to wash the street and chalk the design—to make this art happen.

Please sign up in advance

Drop In Painters & Spectators welcome -- but if you don't sign up in advance, please bring your own 2- to 4-inch brush. It's not too late to donate to this project. Your donation helps to buy a few more brushes and tip the art team.

Still don't know what to do: Capital Culture List

Hear more about the free Manetti Shrem exhibition and other entertainment venues. Great interview here with Rachel Teagle, founding director of the museum. All about color. And, she explains, "The hallway." Listen here, and go see it. "It's theatrical." And, the museum is always free. http://manettishremmuseum.ucdavis.edu/
