Looking for a place to sing?

By Michael G. French, College of Letters and Science

Vocalists wanted.

University Chorus and Chamber Singers at UC Davis are encouraging students, faculty, staff and community members to audition.

The University Chorus is looking for all ranges but especially tenors and basses for their spring quarter performance of Mozart’s Requiem. The Chamber Singers are seeking sopranos and altos only.

UC Davis vocal ensembles give singers an opportunity to perform onstage in Jackson Hall at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The hall’s superb acoustics are renowned by numerous acclaimed musicians and vocalists who have performed there.

“When you join our vocal ensembles, you make new friends who enjoy singing profound texts such as Mozart’s Requiem and performing exciting music,” said Caleb Lewis, director of choirs. “We also learn how to improve our singing voice and strengthen our musical skills. No previous experience is required.”

The University Chorus rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays 4 to 6 p.m., and the Chamber Singers rehearse Mondays and Wednesdays 4 to 6 p.m. in the Music Building. Mozart’s Requiem is set for June 7 in Jackson Hall, and the Chamber Singers’ concert performs May 31 in the Ann E. Pitzer Center.

Feminist Research Institute seeking art

The Feminist Research Institute is calling all UC Davis students to partake in an upcoming art exhibition.

The Institute is seeking to create an artistic platform for undergraduate students at UC Davis to engage with feminist research as it pertains to intersectionality, inclusivity, justice, and transformation. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their work in the context of these key elements, reaching the broader community through their artistic message as they engage with feminism. Potential topics for artists to address include environmental, racial, and reproductive justice, and other transformative, collective projects.

Submissions should be limited to a nondigital format due to space limitations. However, 2D and 3D works are welcome.

Please submit no more than three high-quality jpeg images of the work and a description that includes dimensions and medium, in order (e.g. File 1, File 2, File 3). File names must be in the format: last name_first name_year in school.
