Work Experience Helps Graduates Find Jobs

Graduating seniors are finding that job prospects improve if theyhave completed an internship. Participating in a working assignment in the business world provides opportunities for employment that otherwise may not come, according to Don Hagerty, program manager of liberal arts for the Internship and Career Center at UC Davis. "The job offers are really in small- and medium-size companies," says Hagerty. "The problem is that most students don't know how to look for those jobs because they are not visible on the corporate skyline." That's how internships help. The center can put students in touch with more than 3,600 companies that offer job experience to UC Davis students. Students who participate in internships learn skills that are not taught in the classroom, and they can make valuable contacts that they cannot make by writing cover letters and sending out hundreds of resumes to prospective employers, says Hagerty. For those students who have taken advantage of the program, this year's lean job market has a glimmer of hope.
