Water Management for Production Ag

With predictions of major cuts in water deliveries to California agriculture this year, growers are increasingly being pressured todevelop new water management strategies. Steve Grattan, Cooperative Extension irrigation specialist at UC Davis, believes growers can survive another drought year by re-evaluating their water management options. For example, he suggests that processing-tomato growers consider reducing the amount of planted acreage, thereby cutting water demands. Applying less water to the crop than normal is another option for lowering water requirements. And by planning ahead and practicing good weed control in fields, borders, roadsides and ditch banks, Grattan says growers can significantly improve their irrigation efffciency.
