UC Students Study Abroad

Summer school will mean traveling abroad to one of six countries for 145 students from the University of California. Some students will journey to England, while others will go to France, China, Japan, Scotland and Chile. With 41 participants, UC Davis has more students traveling to foreign academic assignments than any other UC campus, according to campus officials. The programs are designed for UC students interested in international study who may not have the time or resources to spend their junior year abroad, according to Nora McGuinness, director of the international summer sessions program at UC Davis. "This year the international program has fewer students than the year before because of the lingering recession in the United States and the anxiety of traveling abroad," McGuinness says. "When applications were due in February, the Persian Gulf War was still brewing and students had second thoughts about traveling outside the U.S." All courses are taught in English. The average cost ranges from $3,500 to $4,500 for the monthlong program. Accredited courses cover such topics as British writers, Scottish and French literature, Japanese and Chinese culture and Chilean intellectual thought..
