Teaching Feedback

Jo Hardin, a teaching assistant in statistics, plays the role of a new instructor as fellow TA consultants learn how to constructively critique her performance. Hardin is one of eight official UC Davis TA consultants, all graduate students chosen by the Teaching Resources Center for their accomplishments as highly skilled instructors. Their job is to deliver helpful feedback to other teaching assistants-who number almost 1,000 each quarter. For the past three years, these consultants have been offering workshops on instruction and visiting classrooms by request. In addition, graduate students can drop in for on-the-spot teaching advice during consulting office hours at Wellman Hall. When the consultants visit teaching assistants in action, they observe, collect feedback from the class and sometimes videotape the instructor, explains program director Will Davis, who says this program benefits not only the graduate students but their pupils
