Sustainable Ag Guide Available

A guide is now available to help farmers, ranchers, researchers, farm advisors, planners, gardeners and consumers find information about sustainable agriculture. "Sustainable Agriculture for California: A Guide to Information" refers readers to libraries, organizations, books, journals and indexes for information. "Sustainable agriculture is often described as ecologically and economically sound and socially responsible," says Steve Mitchell of the UC Riverside Bio-agricultural Library, who wrote the guide with David Bainbridge. "However, sustainable agriculture may be large-scale or small-scale, single crop or mixed farm, and may use either conventional or organic inputs and practices," he says. Although a great deal of information on sustainability exists, it is widely dispersed, of uneven quality, in limited supply, and often unavailable through conventional sources, according to Mitchell. The guide should help remedy these problems, he says. The guide was funded with a grant from the Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program and the Librarians Association of the Univeristy of California. The $12 guide is available from the UC Division of Agricultural and Natural Resources Publications in Oakland, Calif., (510) 642-2431.
