"Huk Kallpalla" (One Strength), an exhibition of paintings by Peruvian and Quechua painter Florentino Laime Mantilla, commences the first of two exhibitions this year showcasing the work of Rockefeller Foundation visiting indigenous artists-in-residence.
Mantilla will exhibit paintings he has completed during his four-month residency in Davis. Mantilla uses a brilliant palette of reds, purples, blues and yellows to portray Quechua community events and feast days. Many of his paintings are distinctly characterized by his use of geometric planes and pointillism for backgrounds to figures of Quechua men and women celebrating and participating in community events.
Mantilla is Quechua from Cuzco, Peru. He was born in the village of Wakuyo (Chumbivilcas) in 1960. He studied art at the Diego Quispe Tito School of Advanced Studies of Fine Art in Cuzco. Mantilla has had solo and group exhibitions in Peru and France.
Following Mantilla's reception, he will give a slide presentation about his work. The presentation will be in Spanish, with English translation.
The C.N. Gorman Museum is named after the late Carl Nelson Gorman, a UC Davis lecturer emeritus, Navajo artist and World War II Navajo Code Talker.
