Quick Summary

  • Volunteers sought for Campus Lighting Safety Walk: Jan. 22
  • New round of anti-bullying training
  • Picnic Day deadline looms: Jan. 27

Students, faculty, staff, community members — all are welcome and encouraged to volunteer for the 2019 Campus Safety Lighting Walk, organized by the Police Department and Facilities Management.

This year’s event is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, starting at the Memorial Union flagpole (south side of the MU).  Participants will break into teams to walk through various parts of the campus to identify exterior lights that are out and areas where more lighting may be needed, or where trees may need trimming to allow for better lighting.

This year's walk will incorporate a new text-coding system to record light outages and other areas of concern.

Pizza, prizes and one-of-a-kind shirts will be provided. Need volunteer hours? Staff will be on site to sign participants’ forms.

“Join us as we work on ‘Keeping the Night Bright’ and ensuring our community feels safe in well-lit areas on campus after dark,” the organizers said.

Register to volunteer here. Wear comfortable shoes and a warm jacket.

New round of anti-bullying training

Staff Development and Professional Services has posted another round of training sessions on the topic, “Is It Bullying? Awareness and Strategies.”

In Phase 1, as announced by Chancellor Gary S. May last July, all managers and supervisors are strongly encouraged to take the training and to do so by July 2019.

Approximately 1,800 staff members fall into the manager-supervisor category. Those who have not gone through the training can find the schedule and registration links here. Please consider registering as soon as possible so as not to miss this opportunity.

Also note: The training is now a half-hour longer, for a total of 3.5 hours.

Picnic Day deadline looms

Picnic Day organizers are reaching out to departments and department-affiliated organizations to remind them of the Jan. 27 deadline to submit applications for exhibits and other activities at this year’s festivities scheduled for Saturday, April 13.

The same deadline applies for the Picnic Day Parade, Children’s Discovery Fair, entertainment, animal exhibits and Student Organization Fair.

Applications and forms can be found here.
