Low-Income Youths Come for Summer to Experience College Life

What: This summer 300 low-income youths from Yolo and Solano counties will be coming to UC Davis for sports instruction and an introduction to college life. UC Davis joins 174 other colleges around the country in helping economically disadvantaged youths ages 10 to 16. The National Youth Sports program requires that students receive the five-week summer school for free. At least 90 percent of the participants must meet federal poverty standards. The school officially begins June 19, but this Saturday's program kicks off the five-week summer instruction period with physical examinations of the participants, parent orientation and sports activities.

When: Saturday, June 3, 11 a.m. Where: Russell Intramural Field, across from Cowell Health Center, UC Davis

Visuals: Students will receive mandatory physical exams; parents and students will complete all necessary forms; campus and city administrators will speak on the value of this national program (including Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef and Davis Mayor Dave Rosenberg).

Background: The national sports program annually provides about 65,000 American disadvantaged youths the opportunity to benefit from resources made available by a $47,000 matching grant to campuses from the NCAA. "Every year I get calls from kids, single moms and other parents who can't afford to come to our summer campus programs," says Al Beaird, UC Davis sports camp director. "This fills a void in our programs, which have traditionally served the middle class." The program uses sports instruction and competition as a vehicle to enhance self-esteem and respect. In addition, the participants will receive instruction in career and educational opportunities and exposure to the college environment.
