'Jeopardy!' showcases UC Davis expertise

Answer: This university’s world-class veterinary medicine, brewing, and viticulture and enology programs are getting national TV recognition.

Question: What is UC Davis?

The answer-question format should be your clue that UC Davis is going to be on Jeopardy! — three times, in fact, each time with a whole category of answers: veterinary medicine on Wednesday (Oct. 21), viticulture and enology on Nov. 12, and brewing on a date yet to be announced. The game show airs at 7 p.m. on Sacramento’s ABC10.

The show’s Clue Crew was “on location” in May at the School of Veterinary Medicine, the Teaching and Research Winery, and the August A. Busch III Brewing and Food Science Laboratory. Each location served as the backdrop for questions read by Sarah Foss and Jimmy McGuire.

The Clue Crew came to campus after McGuire met Trevor Davies at a party — Davies being a 2015 graduate of UC Davis Extension’s Master Brewers Program, who had brought some homemade hard cider.

Davies and McGuire chatted about the brew and other interesting programs at UC Davis, and McGuire passed along the idea to shoot a series of clues at UC Davis. “That one small conversation at a party opened this whole door,” McGuire said.

He spoke with Dateline UC Davis while shooting questions in the Teaching and Research Winery. Chik Brenneman, who manages the winery, didn’t go in front of the camera, but he served as a technical adviser — showing the Clue Crew hosts the proper way to hold a glass of wine and how to use some of the winery’s technology.

The crew demanded secrecy — no giving away the clues, say, in newspaper stories or in photos or video, in advance of the clues going on Jeopardy!

Curious about those clues? Tune in for the answers and questions!
