Forums are scheduled next week on two projects integral to UC Davis academics: our library of the future; and the campus’s new learning management system, Canvas.

The library will hold a pair of community fair-style town halls on Thursday, Dec. 1, for the unveiling of a draft vision of how the library’s physical spaces can support services and resources that best meet the needs of faculty, researchers and students in the 21st century.

Preliminary answers will begin to emerge in the draft, which synthesizes many months of research and campus input.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to the town halls, where posters, storyboards and a presentation will bring the vision to life. Here is the schedule:

  • Faculty and Staff Town Hall — 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (presentation at noon), multipurpose room, Student Community Center. Refreshments provided.
  • Student Town Hall — 3:30-5 p.m., a community-fair-style event in the main stairwell mezzanine between the lobby and lower level of Shields Library.

Feedback is welcome and will be incorporated into the final vision, due for completion early next year. That vision will guide the development of detailed space requirements and, ultimately, architectural designs for renovation and reconfiguration of the library buildings.

Town hall details and key findings from the midpoint research report are available online.

UC Davis Canvas: Bring your questions, ideas to share

Faculty and teaching assistants who have questions about UC Davis Canvas, especially its Grades tool, are invited to attend an open forum from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, in Room 1130 at The Grove (formerly Surge III). Instructors who want to share ideas about how they’re using the new campus learning management system are also welcome.

The forum is a special, expanded session of the DOLCE (Discussing Online Learning and Collaborative Education) faculty series that meets the first Friday of every month during the academic year.

UC Davis Canvas is replacing SmartSite, which will remain available for teaching only through spring 2017. Most faculty and almost all undergraduates have been using UC Davis Canvas this fall. Faculty who have not yet decided when to move to UC Davis Canvas are encouraged to plan their move soon.

If you have questions but can’t attend the forum, you are welcome to contact the Move to Canvas project team by email.
