Entries Sought for Celeste Turner Wright Poetry Contest

Entries are being accepted for the 15th annual Celeste Turner Wright Poetry Prize competition, open to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of California, Davis. A $100 cash prize will be awarded to the student who submits the best poem or group of poems. The competition, sponsored by the Academy of American Poets, is designed to encourage the artistic and creative development of student poets. Contests are now held at more than 180 colleges and universities. The academy publishes an anthology of selected prize-winning poems every five years. The last edition, "New Voices: 1984-1988" was edited by poet Donald Hall. The academy hopes to compile its next anthology for publication in 1994. Entrants may submit up to five poems. The contest deadline is Monday, April 12. Entries should be addressed to Wright, professor emeritus of English, and be turned in at the English department, Room 114, Sproul Hall. The winning poems will be announced after May 1. Wright was the first female professor at UC Davis and the first Ph.D., male or female, to teach in the humanities area on campus. She chaired the English department for 27 years. Her three volumes of poetry are "Etruscan Princess," "A Sense of Place" and "Seasoned Timber." Shields Library published her memoir, "University Woman," in 1981. A complete list of contest rules and more information can be obtained at Room 114, Sproul Hall, which can be reached at (916) 752-2257.
