IN BRIEF: 2 Halves Make 1 New Bridge

INDEX

Two halves of a new bridge have come together to make one ... the new La Rue Road crossing over the Arboretum Waterway.

The contractor built the western side first, while leaving the old bridge open. Then the first half of the new bridge started carrying two-way traffic, while the contractor tore down the old bridge and put up the eastern half of the new bridge.

The new bridge is 20 feet wider than the old one, which was 70 years old and had very narrow sidewalks and no bike lanes. The new span is 52 feet wide, with full sidewalks and bike lanes, and barriers between the bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides.

Only the sidewalk on the eastern side is open for now— but, still, after more than a year of detours, pedestrians will no doubt like having this connection back, for walking between the central campus and the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science and other buildings at the campus’s south entry.

Remaining tasks include: texturing work on the bridge’s concrete deck (to allow for good traction), asphalt work on the approaches to the bridge, arboretum paths under the bridge and a new stairway at the northeast corner, and regrading the waterway channel. Everything should be done by early November.

Arboretum personnel will take care of planting, most likely in late winter or early spring.

New crew aboard Brush Truck 34

The campus Fire Department rotated crews Monday (Sept. 21) on the North Complex Fire near Oroville.

Several campus crews have been continuously deployed to fires around the state for about a month and a half, Fire Chief Nate Trauernicht said.

Paul Rush, captain, is staying on with Brush Truck 34, and he’s joined by Mike Cullen acting engineer; and Chris Hay and Johnita Lanni-Cradit, firefighters.

Cullen, Hay and Lanni-Cradit subbed in Ben Rizzo, engineer; and Cara Martinez and Avery White, firefighters. They had been on the fire lines since Sept. 7.
