Athletic programs win second Sears Directors' Cup

UC Davis has been awarded its second straight Sears Directors' Cup at the Division II level for the overall performance of its athletic programs, with the Aggies being one of three schools to repeat as champions. Stanford repeated at Division I, and Williams, Mass., was the Division III winner once again. UC Davis scored 706 points, improving on last year's total of 610. Unlike last year, the Aggies led from wire to wire in 1996-97, leading all three tabulations after sports in the fall, winter and spring. "It was a dream year for us," said UC Davis athletics director Greg Warzecka. "We are very proud of this accomplishment and it certainly is a credit to the high-quality coaches and staff we have at UC Davis. This award celebrates the same ideals we have at UC Davis, promoting participation and providing a broad base of high-quality opportunities for as many student-athletes as possible." The Sears Directors' Cup program is presented in partnership by NACDA and Sears, Roebuck and Co., and is the only national awards and scholarship program to recognize all NCAA and NAIA championship sports for both women's and men's athletics.
