Arneson Egghead Sculptures To Be Dedicated Oct.23

Like most college campuses, UC Davis has an abundance of "eggheads" -- the slang name for intellectuals. But now, with the completion of several new pieces of public art by the late Robert Arneson, the campus has even more: Arneson's Eggheads, a series of five sculptures. Arneson, who taught in the campus's art department for nearly 30 years, is widely credited with elevating ceramic sculpture as a serious art form and inspiring the funk art movement. When interviewed in 1991, he said he chose the egghead theme after riding his bicycle around the campus to "get a sense of the place, what the campus is about." His series includes oversized eggheads working, playing, resting and conversing. The sculptures will be dedicated at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, on the north side of Mrak Hall. The ceremony coincides with the launch of a special fund-raising campaign to create a faculty chair in the UC Davis art department to be known as the Robert Arneson Chair in Ceramic Sculpture.
