Architect of International Repute To Speak at UC Davis

What: Architect Antoine Predock will return to the UC Davis campus to present a slide show of his iconoclastic design philosophy. Predock designed the recently completed architecturally distinctive Social Science and Humanities building on campus. An internationally known architect, he designed the four-story building with a fifth story below grade, using inspiration from Sacramento Valley's natural history. The 140,000-square-foot building was designed as a metaphor for California's geography, with two center wings set at angles. The blocks slope upward to four stories, simulating the uplift that formed the Coast Range and Sacramento Valley. In addition, the building was designed to be energy efficient, with recessed windows on the southwest exposures. The two center building blocks were rotated to take advantage of the sun. When: Saturday, April 22 (UC Davis' annual Picnic Day celebration) 10:30 a.m. Where: Lecture hall, 1100 Social Science and Humanities building Visuals: Slide presentation, self-guided tours of the building Background: Predock is the winner of several international design awards.
