Pearl Primus, an internationally known expert in African and African American dance, will be in residence for one week at UC Davis as a UC Regents' Lecturer.
Known as an exceptional dance artist and scholar whose career as a performer spans 50 years, Primus will present one public lecture in the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center on Wednesday, May 11. The talk, "Dance is My Language," will begin at 5:30 p.m. In addition, Primus will conduct a weeklong workshop teaching students African, Caribbean and African American dance forms.
"Primus was a pioneer in exploring her African heritage, and through her research and dance, Primus has provided American blacks a feeling of dignity based in their ancestral roots," says Bobbie Wynn Bolden, dance instructor in physical education at UC Davis. "Primus has used dance as her means of obtaining mutual understanding among ethnic groups."
During her weeklong visit, Primus will prepare students for a public demonstration of ethnic dances on Friday, May 13, in the Wyatt Pavilion.
