Abortion Issues Topic of Law School

Nationally known reproductive rights attorney Kathryn Kolbert will participate in a panel discussion on "Regulating the Abortion Conflict: Reconciling Speech and Choice" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 1, in the UC Davis law school's Moot Court room. Kolbert is a New York attorney and vice president of the New York-based Center for Reproductive Law & Policy. She argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in several key abortion-rights cases, including the 1992 case Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, which challenged Pennsylvania's abortion restrictions. Kolbert will be the lead speaker for the discussion, addressing her belief in the need for increased regulation of anti-abortion protests and stronger controls to prevent the incitement of violence against those who provide abortion services. Responding to her will be Alan Brownstein, a UC Davis law professor, and Valerie Small-Navarro, a legislative advocate for the ACLU of California. The panel discussion is sponsored by the UC Davis law school, Women's Reproductive Health Project, the campus Women's Resources and Research Center, and the Yolo County ACLU chapter.
