The University of California, Davis, has enrolled 29,087 students this fall, with the increase of 1,795 over last year attributed to about 400 additional new students and higher than expected numbers of students continuing their studies.

The count includes health science interns and residents as well as students in non-state supported programs such as the MBA program for working professionals.

On the main campus in Davis, the student population is expected to average 26,500 over the three quarters of the academic year.

Non-white ethnic groups comprise 52.45 percent of all domestic undergraduates, up from last fall's 52.02 percent.

Included in the overall count, 4,676 first-year students came directly from high school, compared to 4,412 last fall. New transfer students numbered 1,930 this fall, compared to last fall's 1,903 final tally; among the transfer students, California residents coming from California community colleges numbered 1,561 this fall for a 1.7 percent increase over last year's 1,535.

Profile of This Fall's Student Body

Men account for 44.8 percent of the total student population, and women 55.2 percent. Just over 92.5 percent of students are California residents. About 3.2 percent are from other parts of the United States, while almost 4.3 percent are international students.

For the general campus, 6,351 students are classified as freshmen; 3,988 as sophomores; 6,094 as juniors; 6,228 as seniors; 89 as teaching credential students; 1,618 as master's or professional degree candidates; and 2,326 as doctoral degree candidates. In the health sciences, 125 are designated as students in the Family Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Program, 32 as master's degree candidates, 252 as doctoral degree candidates, 896 as professional degree candidates, and 818 as interns and residents. In addition, 270 students are enrolled in the Graduate School of Management's MBA program for working professionals.

Of the 22,661 general campus undergraduates, 22,383 are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The ethnic breakdown among the U.S. students, contrasted with last year's figures (in parentheses), is: African American, 2.58 percent or 578 (2.78 percent or 584); American Indian/Alaskan Native, 0.80 percent or 178 (0.84 percent or 177); Caucasian, 43.02 percent or 9,630 (42.99 percent or 9,024); Chicano/Mexican American, 7.35 percent or 1,646 (7.43 percent or 1,560); Chinese, 15.73 percent or 3,521 (15.42 percent or 3,238); East Indian/Pakistani, 2.93 percent or 656 (2.85 percent or 598); Filipino, 4.63 percent or 1,037 (4.46 percent or 937); Japanese, 1.92 percent or 430 (1.92 percent or 409); Korean, 2.64 percent or 592 (2.52 percent or 529); Latino and other Spanish, 2.57 percent or 575 (2.62 percent or 550); other Asian, 2.42 percent or 541 (2.44 percent or 512); Pacific Islander, 1.48 percent or 331 (1.32 percent or 278); Puerto Rican, 0.01 percent or two (0.00 percent or one); Vietnamese, 5.03 percent or 1,125 (5 percent or 1,050); other ethnicities, 2.36 percent or 529 (2.39 percent or 501); and 4.52 percent or 1,011 (4.97 percent or 1,044) did not state ethnicity.
