Two UC Davis scientists have been named to a state panel of science advisers to assist in redesigning marine protected areas in Southern California.

Oceanographer John Largier and marine ecologist Steven Morgan, both of the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, will advise on the south coast study region, from Point Conception in Santa Barbara County south to the California border with Mexico, including offshore islands.

Morgan just completed a two-year appointment as co-chair of the study panel during its focus on the north-central region, off San Francisco.

Department of Fish and Game Director Donald Koch said appointing the 20-member Marine Life Protection Act Master Plan Science Advisory Team "is the next step in protecting the south coast and securing its resources for Californians for years to come. The collaboration of experience and expertise on this team will ensure the actions taken to implement [the act] will continue to be science-based."

The Marine Life Protection Act directs the state to redesign California's system of protected areas to aid in the protection of marine life and habitats, marine ecosystems and marine natural heritage, as well as to improve recreational, educational and research opportunities provided by marine ecosystems.

Recommendations for the south coast study region will be developed by early 2010.
