Top In The Nation

A strong volleyball program is just one reason why the fall issue of Sports Illustrated For Women, which hit newsstands Aug. 26, named UC Davis the best school in the nation for women athletes in the National Collegiate Athletics Association's Division II. A variety of factors were used to develop the list of top schools: championships won; varsity, club and intramural opportunities; graduation rates; financial aid; and fan support. Also considered were facilities, sports-related curriculum, traditions and attitude. UC Davis sponsors 12 intercollegiate sports for women. So far this season, the volleyball team is 8-3 overall, having captured the Alaska Anchorage Invitational on Aug. 28 with a 4-0 record and going 1-1 during its own Western Invitational Volleyball Tournament two weekends ago at Recreation Hall. Coach Sharon King has 92 career wins and should reach 100 sometime in the near future, predict local sports observers.
