TGFS finds success in new venue

Last Wednesday's TGFS picnic saw a turnout of about 4,300 people -- up almost 200 attendees from last year -- as the event found a new home in Shields Grove, at the west end of the arboretum.

A live band and several contests added to the festivities. Particular excitement came when, apparently spooked by grassy terrain underfoot, the Bovine Bingo cow bolted from her pen and ran amid the grounds. "I don't know what happened to those mellow, happy California cows you see in the commercials," event chair Zack O'Donnell jested.

He said the Shields Grove location was well-received and committee members likely will pursue returning to the venue next year.

Bovine Bingo contest winner was Liz Abart, of the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, who won a Disneyland trip package.

Winner of a large gift basket in the Guess the Weight contest -- which challenged participants to guess the combined heft of a campus water tower and several TGFS committee members -- was Barbara Stewart, also of the VMTH, who guessed 951,100 pounds. The actual weight was 959,164 pounds.
