Swing Dance Aficionados

David Brinkerhoff, left, once a wallflower at high-school dances, is now anything but as he performs choreographed dance and aerial moves with his partner at Barbara's Dancing Tonight, a Davis dance studio. As co-founder of the Hepcats Swing Club at Davis and its 10-member performance team, he is part of the swing dancing craze that has swept campuses across the country. "It's an addiction," says Brinkerhoff, a senior from Antioch majoring in agricultural systems and the environment. Faculty and staff members are invited to join the 18-month-old Hepcats club, which has 150 members drawn from campus and beyond. The club offers lessons and hosts dances Tuesday nights at Barbara's. "We want to recruit people and get them onto the floor," Brinkerhoff says. The performance team, which practices about 20 hours a week, counts a half-time show for the Monarchs professional basketball team among the highlights of its performances in the Sacramento and San Francisco areas.
