News
Carolyn Wonderland
Carolyn Wonderland is scheduled to perform July 9 at UC Davis in a setting much like this one: the Quad. Hers is one of three free concerts in the SummerMusic 2007 series.

The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts announced three free summer concerts on the Quad, under sponsorship of Summer Sessions. The events in SummerMusic 2007 are set for Monday, July 9; Wednesday, Aug. 1; and Tuesday, Aug. 21.

The concerts, all due to start at 7:30 p.m.:

• July 9 -- Blues artist Carolyn Wonderland, described as a musical triple threat, celebrated for her soulful vocals, her eclectic songwriting and her guitar work. She plays the trumpet, too. Wonderland has toured with Buddy Guy and Bob Dylan, jammed with Los Lobos, and won comparisons to Bonnie Raitt. Her music is predominately blues-based, with elements of country, swing, zydeco, surf and other genres.

• Aug. 1 -- The Beausoleil sextet, mixing the rich Creole and Cajun traditions of Louisiana with zydeco, New Orleans jazz, blues, Tex-Mex and more. Beausoliel has recorded more than 30 albums, including the 1997 Grammy-winning L'amour Ou La Folie. Founder Michael Doucet is the recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship.

• Aug. 21 -- Grupo Fantasma, hailed by the Pop Culture Press as "one of the all-time great Texas dance bands." The 11-member Grupo Fantasma's sound -- from a double rhythm section and four horns -- encompasses contemporary and traditional Latin music influences. The group has opened for a wide range of artists including Los Lobos, Flaco Jimenez, Patti Smith and KRS-One. Grupo Fantasma's honors include a 2005 Univision Award as best Latin rock group.
