State Environmental Chief Gets Briefed on Campus Research

Winston Hickox, secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency, visited campus last week to talk with scientists about their research. Among them were were Kate Scow, associate professor of land, air and water resources, who discovered a microbe that eats MBTE, the potentially carcinogenic fuel additive found in California waterways. Scow reported to Hickox that the microbe, growing in the containers in front of photo, was ready to be put in the field this week. Also on their tour of UC Davis last week, Hickox and other Cal EPA officials talked with School of Veterinary Medicine researchers about air and water toxicants and their impact on animal health
